GAME by Walter Dean Myers 55-85

Summary:
The chapeter had started off differently, because it started off with a basketball game, which was very interesting. So, the usually starting five was on the court, but the only difference was Tomas had got the start, as the starting forwars. Which Drew, though tomas didnt earn, it was like he was handed it. Anyways the team they were playing was called a FDA team, which meant they were a team that didnt have one great player, but they play good as a team. FDA teams tend to play zone, so they would make most teams shoot three pointers. They werent very athletic team either thats why zone fit them good, because it was simple to stop people from getting into the lane. Anyways, Drew thinks that this game is a easy win, and when he is in the game he is proving that, but after half time the coach got mad at him, and he stayed on the bench, which was the reason why they lost that game. Drew was feeling bad about himself, because of it.

Quote :
"What I figure was that as long as it was me doing my thing, a black player on a black team, then it would be about me and the team(Myers 67)"

Reactionary:
I though the quote was interesting because he thought that, that was the only way he would be seen as a star, which i dont think is true, because if you do good in any situation, you will shine. So I think that quote is wrong in a way.

Game 30-55

Summary:
So now the first game of the second part of the season starts, and they are playing Wadleigh. This is there first and only non-league game, this is going to be a tough game because the kids and the other team are fast and they never become tired. Quoting Drew , "The only way to stop them was to get an early lead and then control the boards so they couldnt run". Which they didnt so they lose by 12 points, but it wasnt the players fault they lost, because the coach was looking out for one person because he wanted him to do good. That didnt go as planned because Tomas had the ball stripped from him, and he didnt play any defense. Once the game was over the team got on the bus, and went to the school . When they arrived at the school, tomas asked drew to come with him to his house. Drew meets his mother, and they talk about what therr family has been through.

Quote:
"I never heard of anybody going to jail for writing in a newspaper" (Myers 46)

Reactionary:
I feel as if it is stupid to the fact that the father, and who ever was in the letter had to go to jail because of a writing. The law about invade there space by putting them in jail for a simple thing like that.

GAME by Walter Dean Myers 1-30

Summary:
The story had started off with the family hear news about two teenage boys, that had attempted robbery, which had caused one of them to died, and the other to get seriously injuried. Both teenagers should have been in the school which was said on the news. The clerk in the store had suffer diedly wounds, but survived. There mother is worried as her children are getting older that her children might get into that mess. So that is why she tell them to do activites after school. Drew is 6'5 and plays basketball for his school James Bladwin Academy, he plays the guard position, is the star of the team. He is in his senior trying to get recrutied by Divsion 1 schools. His coach this year decided to go with a whole different system because he thinks it will work better for the team.

Quote:
"Every time you pick up a newspaper, every time you switch on the television, its more of our young men either going to jail".

Reactionary:
Based on what the quote had explained, it was sad to read, because where I live in boston some of tht exactly happens, so i can relate what happens close to were I live, to where drew and his family lives in New York. I think it really bring down the communtiy when many of the kids die or go to jail because they dont show good examples to the young kids. Those types of things that happen are very unfortunate, but you dont have to go down that path if you dint want to.

THINK BIG by Ben Carson pg 171- 231

Summary:
In these final chapters Ben Carson starts to talk about what Think Big means. He starts off by talking about T which mean talent, and starts to say talent comes with some people, and other work for it. the next Letter is H, which means honesty, and he means as along as your alive you should be honest because it shows, he great of a person you are. I is the next letter, and it means insight, it is about what we observe, and what we commit are selves to. the next letter is N because if your nice to people, other will respond to you. The word Big starts from here, and it all together has a very power meaning. B means book, and he trying to say you must read to gain knowledge. The letter I means Indepth knowledge means that you should be able to help others, and the last letter we have is G, which stands for God, because if you beliveve he will help you. That is the end!!
Quote:
If we commit ourselves to reading thus increasing out knowledge, only God limits how far we can go in this world (Carson 201).
Reaction:My reaction towards this quote is that when you read more, you can gain more knowledge. It really explains to me that read is power. It shows the whole world that when you read you can gain more knowledge.

THINK BIG by Ben Carson pg 111-170

Summary:
Now, that Ben is out of college he really has to find his way, to becoming a good doctor, and first he becomes a intern at a local hispotal. This were he beginnings, at this place Ben has to help the doctors with the surgury's they have to perform, by passing them the tools. He has to pay close attention so he doesnt pass the wrong tool to the surgery, so he wouldnt mess up the body. When he is in that type of situation, his goal is to stay as relaxed, and ready for anything that is about to come his way. That is how he first started off, but sooner or later Ben would go to John hopkins and perform surgery's over there. He had two twins connected, and his job was to seperate them which he did, but it was very diffucilt and it took up alot of time.During the surgery many people didnt think it could be done, but it was, and it came down to the wire, were there was a life or death situation for the twin, he had 6 seconds left , and he finished. After the surgery he was looked at like a "hero.
Quote:
"Sometimes givng our best and Thinking Big involves risk" (Carson 127)
Reaction:
When i read this quote I was thinking, that i heard somthing like that before, and so i kept thinking about where I heard it from. I found out, it was my mother who told me a quote very similiar. So, i think that is a great quote to tell kids or anybody, because the only way you might get somewhere is if you take a risk, and you dont take a risk you will never know what could of happened.

THINK BIG by Ben Carson pg 80-110

Summary:

The other significant people in Ben Carson's life are the people that are with him through trying to become a doctor. He is succeeding because of the people chossing to help him, he is struggling a little bit, but that support that he is obtaining from those people are a big help. While in medical school Ben Carson has met my other students who are just as smart as him, or like he would say smarter then him. One person that Ben Carson did credit for his success was Carol james because she has been at John Hopikins for over 21 years, and she is always there for him when he needs it. One advantage the Ben said while working with her is that
Quote: she is able to understand what he is thinking. he said she was one of those few people in his life that know more about him, then he knows about himself, and the other two people are his mother, and his wife. That is how the chapter ends with knowing about the people in Ben's life that know about him, more then he knows about himself.

"They simply know rather, have an intutive knowledge, and cannot begin to explain why they do certain things." ( Carson 83)

Reaction:

The reason why I put that quote up for the quote I wanted was because I dont have the clearest understanding of it, and I wanted one. So i was going to see if anybody can help me out with the quote, but from what i think about the quote, it is very informative. So my reaction to what the book as to offer is ben carson is finding out were he truly belongs, because his path is interesting.

THINK BIG by Ben Carson pg 45-80

Summary:

So this chapter begins as Ben Carson's mother tells a story about herself, and what she went through as a child. She really didnt have the childhood she had wanted, because when she was growing up girls were to learn to work around the house, and she quit after the 3th grade, because her mother took her out, so she could learn more about what wives should be doing around the house. So thats how the mother childhood life was. She doesnt want her kids to go through the same thing, she wants them to go to college, and get good grades, so they can make somthing out of themselves. Now, thats it for the mother, lets continue with Ben. Ben had started regonize he was smart in the 5th grade and so did his teachers, but one teacher in particularly, which was he science teacher, regonize his knowledge, and later that year became Ben's mentor, he helped been all the way until 9th, and throughout those years, the teacher had asked Ben to stay back after school, and help him with somethings, and help other student. By the time he had gotten to 9th grade a man by the name of Mr. McCotter, was a biology teacher for him, and he pushed Ben to another level which he new Ben could achieve. This man helped Ben feel better about himself and he also expect Ben to do very well in his espically because Ben's older brother did. Later on in Ben's life he will met other mentors.

Quote:

"There is no such person as a self made individual"

Reactionary:

That quote that is there is very powerful to me, because no one can be anything without anybody helping them out, and I get told that by my Uncle everytime I see him. I put that deep inside my heart and keep it there because, I would never be where I am with out my parents, family, and teachers.

THINK BIG by Ben Carson pg 9- 45

Summary:
Ben Carson he was that type of person that didnt care about school so much, his main focuse was going outside with his friends after school, and play his favorite games, softball, and tip the top.Ben and his friends would play these two games for hours because, they fun to them, but once they had become tired they had gone home. Ben had grew up in Boston, MA, but later moved to Detriot because his father had left the family, and had started a new life. Ben had allows though has dad would come back but it never, but now the mother Sonya Carson is the leader of the house hold. She works very hard each day, and tells her children that they are smart, but they dont believe her because the student's in their consider them to be the dumbest kids in the class. One day after work Sonya had asked GOB to help her find a way to help her two sons, obtain good grades in school, and once she had gotten home, she knew what she had to do. She had shut off the tv, that the boys had been watching, and told them they have been wasting their time, in stead they could be study for test, and reviewing their homework. She had said that for now on once they have gotten home they would have to start their homework immediatley, and gotten watch any tv, until all of their homework had been completed. They were only aloud to watch two preselected tv programs a week. They were required by there mother to get 2 books from the library each week, and write a report for her, and hand it in by the end of the week. By doing all this extra work for his mother ben, have gained more knowledge, and felt better about himself. He had started to answer some questions the teachers had asked during class time, and by the middle of the sixth grade school year, benjamin had become the smartest of his class. From there on ben had been the smartest, and had also be obnxious, but once he had enrolled in yale, he had felt like he was in 5th grade, all over again. It took him time to relieve that he wasnt the smartest anymore, and he had to study harder then a had ever had to do before.

Quote:
" Maybe thats's not the way I should be. What if I try to be confident in what iam doign and not make it so obvious that I have to be the best ? "

Reaction:
The quote was very interesting to me, because in the book when benjamin was very obnxious, but he relieved, if he keeps it inside of him that he is the smartest, and doesnt let anybody know that, everybody will like him for who he is. It is interest how much knowledge Ben had gain from going to the library everyday to read books.
